Benefits of Coconut Oil - Doter

I freaking LOVE coconut oil. Like LOVE IT! It goes on everything and in everything. I know many of you have read all its benefits but I want to share how it’s helped me and our little family.

Coconut oil comes in two forms: Refined and Unrefined. Refined Coconut Oil is made from the DRIED meat of the coconut and typically has no coconut flavour or smell. To make it without a flavour or aroma the refining process will bleach and deoderize the oil. Unrefined (aka. Virgin) is made from FRESH coconut so there will be a light coconut scent and a coconutty flavor. These days you can buy a variety of coconut oils from flavored,  no aroma and the original, so choose wisely.

As you picked up from the first paragraph I love coconut, so the aroma and flavor don’t bother me one bit. I actually enjoy it when my food has a hint of coconut, so with that being said I do not buy Refined Coconut Oil. I also am weird about the bleaching process… but could be my paranoia.

Let’s dive into my everyday uses for this beloved oil (side note: Would LOVE for you to share how you use it. I’m learning new ways to utilize this oil on a daily, so please tell me your secrets!)

Make Up Remover: I used to spend a fortune on make up remover. I had make up remover pads and a separate eye make up remover that sometimes made my eyes feel weird. I read that using coconut oil as a make up remover works wonders. Many moons ago (phst… like 3 years ago), I began using it as a make up remover and haven’t looked back! It’s FANTASTIC! All you need is a little 1/4 tsp of coconut oil, rub in the palms of your hands to melt it and gently rub all over your face in circular motions. I then very gently put the excess coconut oil on my eyes to remove my waterproof mascara. I then have a towel next to me that I run under very warm water (almost hot) and lay the face towel over my face to steam out my pores. I wipe the coconut oil off my face and eyes and BAM! clean, soft face. This may sound like a lot of work but it honestly takes me less then a minute and it feels fantastic.

Moisturizer: I warm just a little bit of oil in my hands and rub it all over my body. I typically do this before bed, so it has the night to soak in. In the summertime, I put the coconut oil on my sun burns (if I get any). Coconut oil is also great for itchy dry skin, cuts or even rashes. It’s mild but has been proven to speed up healing. You can create your own neosporen (without chemicals) by mixing Coconut Oil, Lavender Oil, Tea Tree Oil & Frankincense.

Bulletproof Coffee:  Mark is big into intermittent fasting, so in the mornings we (he) doesn’t eat until lunch time. I typically have a breakfast around 10am, but we both wake up at 5:30am, so to stay full for that amount of time we drink black coffee with a tsp of Virgin Coconut Oil and a dash of Cinnamon (or a drop of Cinnamon Oil). It’s FANTASTIC! Keeps me full, alert and helps speed up the metabolism.

Butter Alternative: Yup… there is a healthy alternative to beloved butter. Instead of putting butter on toast, or in baked goods, I replace with coconut oil. In baked goods I typically melt the coconut oil, in order for it to blend well and make the ingredients stick together. Works like a charm!

Cooking Oil: When I’m cooking ground beef/turkey or even frying eggs, I use coconut oil instead of vegetable oil.

Oil Pulling: I know people think this is a fad, but I can tell you it works wonders for me. My teeth have never felt cleaner, my mouth has never been this fresh, and I honestly (subconsciously) feel like it is removing the toxins from my body. I don’t get sick as often, and my oral health seems to be on track. I put a tsp of coconut oil in my mouth letting it swish around for 5-10 minutes every morning while I’m getting ready. I spit the oil out in the garbage can (NOT DOWN THE DRAIN). It will clog your drain if you do it on a daily basis. After I rinse my mouth out with warm water and brush my teeth. For an extra fresh clean, I put a drop of On Guard or Cinnamon Oil in a cup of water and swish it around like mouth wash. I’ve read from other websites stating that it can cure gingivitis and repair cavities, so if that’s the case I will continue to do this on a regular.

If you have a fur baby (aka. Dog) Coconut Oil is so good for them and they love it. Add a tsp of coconut oil to their food, or a dollop in their treat toy. They’ll lick it up in a second. The lauric acid in Coconut Oil is a fabulous immune booster and will also help make your dogs coat shiny and soft.

I do want to share a few things about Coconut Oil….. One being, when Coconut Oil came out as a craze, the market couldn’t keep up. It was popular in South Asian cultures but once it made it to North America and the masses like anything really it got out of hand. It grew overnight and the original companies couldn’t keep up with the demand, so new companies cropped up left, right and centre which means quality went down hill. In order for them to produce that kind of volume quickly they were whacking down coconut trees all over the tropics, and cutting corners just to make a buck. Moral of the story is if you are one to really want to reap the benefits of coconut oil, buy the Organic Virgin (Unrefined) FAIR TRADE Coconut Oil. It is more expensive, and you’ll need to buy it from a health food store like Whole Foods, Pomme, Capers, or even Trader Joes, but be mindful of the product you are buying. The cheap sh*t from Superstore is not giving you the same benefits as the fresh, no pesticide fair trade product.  You are also helping to support the communities that the coconut oil comes from. Second point I want to make, Coconut Oil is high in calories. Eating like 5 tablespoons a day, is not helping you. It may be healthy saturated fat, but it is still fat, so eating it in moderation and using it for the right purposes is best to gain the benefits of coconut oil.

How do you use Coconut oil?? Please share I’m always interested how others utilize this amazing oil.

xoxo, Michelle
